How do I make a minecraft server?

I was thinking I might make my own minecraft server and I was wondering what to do. If you guys have any tips let me know.

I don't know much about running Minecraft servers, but I do know that there are two main routes to go: Bukkit and Hamachi. I've tried to get a Hamachi server up before, laggy as all get-out, and starting a Bukkit server requires port-forwarding, something I've just never had the stomach to sit through. :>_<: Jak probably knows a bit more about it than I do.

First of all, I have no idea how the Hamachi one works since I have never had to go down that route.

Secondly, I really suggest reading the Wiki. The articles below detail on installing a vanilla Minecraf server and a Bukkit server.
