Towers of Aesmora
A Minecraft Beta Adventure Map
-This map, when completed, will be a mix of Adventure, RPG, and Parkour maps, integrated through an open world with a gripping storyline and difficult Parkour puzzles. As the name suggests, the only minecraftian-made structures will be towers (mostly). Hope you're not afraid of heights...-
I have been working on a Minecraft Adventure map for a while now, and I'm ready to begin having it be tested for realzees. The story is still a work in progress, so what you'll be doing is testing the various elements that will create the challenges to be integrated in the final work.
In this map, there are three towers, and in front of each tower, a sign with its difficulty rating. When you are done playing it, I'd like to know what your difficulty rating was for each tower, and why. Also, to anyone who makes minecraft videos, I would really appreciate it if you recorded yourself playing this map, and then posted it in this thread, along with your feedback. NOTE: as of now, I would rather not get feedback on the style of the towers, rather the difficulty of completing them.
BETA - Towers 4, 5 - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
In this map, there are two towers, both of which are fairly difficult. When you are done playing it, I'd like to know what your difficulty rating was for each tower, and why, as well as any other feedback you may have. Also, to anyone who makes minecraft videos, I would really appreciate it if you recorded yourself playing this map, and then posted it in this thread, along with your feedback. NOTE: as of now, I would rather not get feedback on the style of the towers, rather the difficulty of completing them.
BETA - Towers 6, 7 - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
In this map, there are two towers, ranging in difficulty with the first being medium, and the second being harder. When you are done playing it, I'd like to know what your difficulty rating was for each tower, and why, as well as any other feedback you may have. This will be the last of my beta downloads, as production on the final map will be starting soon. I have nearly every tower ready, all that remains is to sew together the continent, towers, and story.

Mediafire says you link is missing or broken, Andrew. I wanted to test them.

I believe I've fixed it now.

I don't mean to be rude here BiO, but I was rather dissappointed with this. It took me 3 mins to clear the 4/5 one, no trouble, and then about 5-6 mins combined to clear the other two. The problem I find here is that it is no where near substantial enough at the moment. Sure, the Parkour is fun, but it isn't actually that challenging, and each tower is rather small. Another issue is that sure, you get prizes at the end, but whats the point of them? WHat are you going to use them for? Always think that - why would the player need or want these items? Also, as I said before, it isn't very substantial. About 10 mins to clear a map? No thank you! I'm looking for something to enthrall me, make me want to play it through to the end. As a point on its own, this doesn't have an end since it doesn't have a storyline to complete. Final point, right now it is 10 mins playtime, a good map needs about 1-3 hours playtime to be truly awesome. I understand that you are working on a story line, but you appear to have been working on this map for about 3 months now and I expected a little bit better.
Anyways, just take that under your wing and keep working at it pal!

Heh, thanks for the feedback, but just to let you know, this is a really old map, and I've improved things substantially since, at least as far as difficulty goes. Also, the towers are really just the basic gameplay mechanics to be implemented. I'm going to have a large map, but right now all I need is for people to test the difficulty of the parkour. Also, this map has been in the works for three months, but the amount of time I've invested in it is probably only about ten hours, including other towers I haven't yet released.
I'm afraid these tests won't be the substantial playtime you're looking for, but I'm hoping the final map will be much better and much longer.
Anyways, thanks for the feedback, it always helps me out.

Pictures... here we go... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] That's all the towers [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Top of the first one [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The cheat vine on the trolltower (the middle one) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Inside the trolltower [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The cold storage room, I assume can break the ice? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Top of the last one
First tower (closest to arrow): Not too hard, probably should be 3/5
Second tower: Trolling chests are trolling. Pretty easy when you use the cheat vine. Otherwise the difficulty suits it.
Last tower: Got stuck on the last jump before you climb around outside the tower. Webs are really annoying when fallen into. Difficulty suits.
Anything else you want me to comment on?

I know I said this in the chatbox, but dang, it looks really good with that texture pack!
And thanks for the feedback, especially letting me know about the cheat vine on tower 2, I'll be sure to remove it so it will be much harder.

That face is more creepy than awesome. Like someone broke the awesome of Mr. Awesome. The eyes are inverted or something.
Anyway, we are meant to use the vines on the last tower, right? After parkouring around the external edge?

Yes, that is the only way to reach the top of the tower without cheating.
Also, if things work in my favor today, I should have a new upload available fairly soon. There will be two towers, both of which have much more difficult parkour than previous towers. I'll also probably be using ED's painterly pack to take screenshots from now on, as I've discovered that everything looks really good using that pack.

Awsum!
BTW, in my pack oak/apple planks and pine planks are the same colour, because I was using it before the update and it's the darkest wood painterly has. So watch out for using them together.

OP is opening post, right?
Downloading as I type...
Got it, now to continue testing.
I've returned from Minecraftia and I've got backs to feed you
Tower 4 - I liked the jumping for ladders (raged a bit on the second jump though) - Confusing when you have to climb the vine outside (at least that's the only way up I could see) - I like the way you have to fall to get to the middle floors - Confusing at the top where there's the big obsidian thing, I could get onto the side of it but there was a web stop pig me from getting on top, I went creative and flew on top and there was nothing. Clearly you're not meant to go up there but the fact I could get on the side sent mixed messages - I found the chest in the fallen arm - I was surprised to find nothing in the other arms - I liked the ladders that were staggered left and right - Not many goodies to get from the tower
Tower 5 - Easier than Tower 4 - Another outside walk and still enjoying that - Again, not much of a reward
Is paper some kind of special thing in the map? Are you getting rid of all the sugar cane so that it's the only way to make bookshelves or something? Otherwise paper is so easy to get I don't see why it would be in the towers.
Do you want pictures? Or are you happy 'cause you got my pack? Okays, that was fun. More?

There is a way to reach the top lantern in Tower #4, just keep trying. And I don't think I included any obsidian, I did however include netherrack, since it is a signaltower.
Paper is going to be a plot-related reward, something that will bring you closer to the finale. I'll be including larger, more meaningful rewards in the final map, but I haven't decided what those rewards should be, only that paper is a definite.
And I doubt people crafting paper from sugarcane is going to be a difficulty.

Just got done the towers, And i must say they were all pretty challenging in their own way. Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not sure I'd classify this as an adventure map as much as a parkour/challenge map, but then again it isn't done so i have no idea what your plans are to bring these towers all together. My favorite was definitely the "signal tower", it was the most intimidating in appearance, and the climb just felt very unique. All in all great work andrew

Thanks chunk, glad to hear you like it. And like I told jak, the towers are only an element of what I've got planned, and they'll be MCedit'ed into the landscape of the final map.

Ah, I forgot, I used to use my netherack texture for obsidian. I got to the room it is in, I was wondering if it's possible to get on top of it. I'll go have another try...
Okays, I tried something and got up. So much falling in this tower.

I've got a few more details I can share with you all about the final map.
For one thing, I've been working on the terrain in Worldpainter, a program I highly suggest you guys check out (Chunk told me about it originally). As the name of the map would suggest, the area the map is going to take place on is called Aesmora, and it's going to be something of a supercontinent (in Minecraftia terms) that used to be populated by normal people. However, something happened which caused several of the towers scattered across the land to fall into disrepair, and it's your job to find out what made this happen. I'm aiming for it to have something of a Shadow of the Colossus feel to it, meaning wandering around an abandoned landscape, looking for these huge towers based on environmental clues.
I'm not going to be giving out much more as far as maps go, though I'll say I do have a lot of towers prepared to be implemented.

Through the magic of Too Many Items, Single Player Commands, and WorldEdit, production on this map is really scooting along. I've got a couple towers that I'm contemplating bundling together into the final beta download, then after that I'm just left to sew together the continent, towers, and storyline.
Keep an eye on this thread, as I may announce a new download within the next couple hours.
